When to Plan Your Heater Replacement

Planning your replacement from late spring through early fall gives you time to research your options, explore financing plans, and review rebates and incentives available under current program rules.

That lead time also lets you schedule installation at your convenience rather than scrambling for emergency service. If your current heater is more than 15 years old, showing signs of decline, requiring recurring repairs, or driving up your energy bills, start the conversation before winter demand makes scheduling more challenging.

Planning ahead gives us time to assess whether it makes more sense to repair the existing equipment, upgrade certain components, or move forward with furnace replacement, boiler replacement, or another heating solution. The decision can account for the system’s age, repair history, safety concerns, efficiency, and ability to maintain consistent temperatures. It also gives you time to consider whether insulation, air sealing, ductwork, or electrical upgrades should be coordinated with the project.

When we meet with you, we can review your past utility bills, discuss how each floor feels during colder weather, and outline the proposed replacement process. We can also discuss available rebates from Con Edison and the Clean Heat program, along with financing options and any qualifications that apply to the property or equipment.

Heat Pump, Conventional & Hybrid Heating Options

The appropriate replacement depends on your home’s existing infrastructure and how much of the property the new system needs to serve. We provide high-efficiency heat pump installation and ductless mini-split installation services, and we can help you compare these technologies with conventional or hybrid approaches.

Common replacement paths include:

• Conventional heating: Furnace replacement or boiler replacement may retain the home’s existing forced-air or hydronic distribution when that infrastructure remains suitable.
• Ducted heat pumps: Cold-climate heat pumps can provide heating and cooling through compatible ductwork, subject to system design and the home’s heating needs.
• Ductless mini-split systems: Individual indoor units can serve rooms or areas without suitable ductwork and may support partial-home or whole-home designs.
• Hybrid systems: A heat pump may supplement an existing heating system when a complete conversion isn’t the preferred approach.

Our assessment can consider room-by-room heating needs, duct condition, insulation, outdoor-unit placement, controls, electrical service capacity, and backup heat requirements. A whole-home conversion may require a different design than a system intended to serve one floor, an addition, or specific rooms.

We work with Con Edison and NYS Clean Heat to help customers review incentives that may apply to qualifying heat pump projects. Eligibility and incentive values can vary by utility, property type, equipment, project scope, and current program rules. We’ll discuss the information needed to evaluate available pathways without assuming that every project qualifies.
